Workshop 1: Bridging Math and Science Through Proportional Reasoning
Description: During this workshop, we will take a deep-dive into student development of proportional reasoning, critical to mastering concepts in fields ranging from science to engineering. A unit of classroom instructional materials that aid students in building a rich model of what it means to reason proportionally will be shared.
Since proportional reasoning crosses grade levels and content areas, this workshop is appropriate for teachers from all STEM fields and a variety of grade levels. Activities shared will begin with the foundational development of the ratio concept ( late elementary to middle school grades) and span into increasingly sophisticated use of proportional reasoning ( applicable to high school and and early college).

Description: This workshop will help you develop effective modeling pedagogy in the instruction of fundamental electricity and magnetism concepts. Modeling Instruction emphasizes a deep and robust understanding of concepts while emphasizing a model-centered approach. This type of approach is central to effective implementation of the NGSS and/or the NCCRSS and draws heavily from cognitive science. You’ll learn how your students can develop conceptual models through data-driven activities that fully integrate effective data evaluation and interpretation strategies. While content materials will be provided, participants will be encouraged to examine how the materials can be modified, supplemented, and scaffolded throughout their curriculum.

AMTA Modeling Biology: An introduction to Biology Modeling Instruction pedagogy and implementation. Participants work through modeling cycles to build coherence in biology big ideas and develop a storyline. Participants are supported in the Modeling Instruction through teacher notes and curriculum that supports the implementation of model building, The course will focus on the traditional topics of a yearlong general biology course (classification, cell structure/function, growth and reproduction, ecology, evolution, energy flow: micro to macro, heredity). The Modeling Method has been shown to be a highly effective extension of the traditional three-step learning cycle (observe, generalize, apply). The modeling cycle addresses deficiencies of the learning cycle by assisting students to construct understanding from observations, confronting student preconceptions, examining student thought processes through “whiteboarding” and Socratic dialoguing. Participants will receive printed and electronically stored versions of the Biology Modeling Handbook and ancillary materials.

AMTA Modeling Physics Mechanics: This workshop in physics is for high school teachers. Middle school teachers who want a better understanding of the physical science content they must teach may also find the workshop helpful. The workshop focuses on pedagogical as well as content knowledge and the skills needed to effectively teach high school mechanics. The Modeling Method of Instruction workshop gives teachers practical experience organizing their classroom and content around scientific models and practices the techniques of facilitating effective inquiry and discussion in the science classroom. Content includes Newton’s laws, cross-curricular modeling of energy storage and transfer with emphasis on mechanical energy storage and transfer, momentum, and basic models in kinematics and dynamics (free particle, constantly accelerating particle).
