AMTA Modeling Biology:  An introduction to Biology Modeling Instruction pedagogy and implementation. Participants work through modeling cycles to build coherence in biology big ideas and develop a storyline. Participants are supported in the Modeling Instruction through teacher notes and curriculum that supports the implementation of model building, The course will focus on the traditional topics of a yearlong general biology course (classification, cell structure/function, growth and reproduction, ecology, evolution, energy flow: micro to macro, heredity). The Modeling Method has been shown to be a highly effective extension of the traditional three-step learning cycle (observe, generalize, apply). The modeling cycle addresses deficiencies of the learning cycle by assisting students to construct understanding from observations, confronting student preconceptions, examining student thought processes through “whiteboarding” and Socratic dialoguing. Participants will receive printed and electronically stored versions of the Biology Modeling Handbook and ancillary materials.

Registration has now opened for these workshops. Here is the link to register. You will be able to choose which workshop you will be attending in the questions listed in the registration link.

Pricing: AMTA Workshops are $1050 for two weeks with a residential option to stay on campus for $699 in one of our apartment style dormitories.

If you need an invoice because your school district will be registering for you and paying directly, please reach out to Kristi Reklinski

Middle School Math & Science

Modeling Middle School Math Workshop 2 : Modeling Functions and Linear Relationships

Workshop 2:  Modeling Functions and Linear Relations for Interdisciplinary Understanding

Description:  The benefit of understanding functional relationships between quantities crosses grade levels and content areas, and is useful in areas as diverse as describing school demographics to modeling physical systems.  Unfortunately, introduction of the “function” concept is often delayed to an abstract treatment in later grades that is obscured by mathematical formalism.

During this workshop we will share activities to aid students in understanding mathematical functions as relationships between two quantities.  Concrete, real-world samples of related quantities from a variety of functional types (beyond merely linear) will be represented using data tables, graphs, words, and ultimately formulas.  Activities shared will begin with the foundational development of functions as relationships ( middle school grades) and span into increasingly sophisticated covariational reasoning necessary in STEM fields through high school and college.

Dates: June 24-27, 2024

Daily Schedule:  8:00 am-3:30 pm with 1 hour lunch break,  30 professional development hours

Location: Arizona State University – Tempe Campus

Hosted by:

ASU Department of Physics,  Bateman Physical Science Building – Room PSH362

( Parking passes will be available.  Modeling Workshops in Physics and Chemistry will be occurring simultaneously at the same site, as well the AMTA Summer conference)

Instructors:  Christel Bruno ( STEM Specialist), Tracy Ryan (Middle School Math Specialist) and Kelli Warble (Math and Physics Modeling Workshop Leader).

Modeling Middle School Math Workshop 1: Bridging Math and Science Through Proportional Reasoning

Workshop 1:  Bridging Math and Science Through Proportional Reasoning

Description:  During this workshop, we will take a deep-dive into student development of proportional reasoning, critical to mastering concepts in fields ranging from science to engineering.  A unit of classroom instructional materials that aid students in building a rich model of what it means to reason proportionally will be shared.

Since proportional reasoning crosses grade levels and content areas, this workshop is appropriate for teachers from all STEM fields and a variety of grade levels.  Activities shared will begin with the foundational development of the ratio concept ( late elementary to middle school grades) and span into increasingly sophisticated use of proportional reasoning ( applicable to high school and and early college).

Dates: June 17-21, 2024

Daily Schedule:  8:00 am-3:30 pm with 1 hour lunch break,  30 professional development hours
